What’s up with the sizing

Before buying this make sure you already have a 9/16” drill bit. I assumed that I surely had the base covered in my assorted drill bits. I was wrong. Multiple trips to the hardware store and unnecessary frustration later I’m asking why not just use a standard size 3/8 or 1/2? The product works just fine as advertised but the additional $80 for materials left a bad taste in my mouth.,
